Olympic Hurdler David Oliver on Investing as it pertains to its similarities to being a professional athlete (a very common comparison, I might add…)
“That’s an excellent comparison. Every year, at the beginning of my fall training, my coach and I formulate an optimal game plan for the year. Of course, plans never go exactly the way you expect. So as a professional athlete I have to make adjustments on the fly, just like one does when investing. When I “fail” I always find a way to move forward, learn what went wrong, and figure out a way to make sure I don’t repeat the same mistakes. It’s all about rebounding and making it back to the top. I can’t be part-way committed because people lose faith in you and your ability to take care of business, just like someone would when you are failing to execute your portfolio in a proper manner. I may lose one race, you may lose on a trade, but that doesn’t make us failures. We learn from our experiences, good or bad and keep moving forward.”
